if its anything that i've observed from being overseas, its that its best to be born as a white man or an asian (meaning chinese/korean/jap - sorry my indian/malay friends) girl.
ok maybe not so much the asian girl, but white guys definitely have it better than the rest of them.
come to think of it, i hadn't seen a white beggar up till i had been in Europe. and that was the first time that it hit me that there could be white people that are poor too. 'of course there would be', you might say. but having been raised in a society where speaking english = better educated and cooler, and being constantly fed with american dramas like Gossip Girl.. its quite hard to imagine a white person having to sell tissue paper packs like the aunties at the Bishan MRT station in order to get by.
ok sorry for digressing, my point is, being a white man now just works better for you. people automatically assume that you are wealthier, more cultured, better educated and want to take pictures with you so that they can show off to their other friends that they are cooler by association.
it even extends to job opportunities. if you claim to be a native English speaker (which a large portion of Singaporeans are) but don't have the blonde hair and blue eyes, foreign employers automatically cast you the "are you sure you are?" look.
also, its easier to bed girls. especially if you're French, whom many of my friends have said to be the biggest playboys!
can you blame the late MJ for bleaching his skin?

I beg to differ though, at least in my experience. Of which I have plenty considering I have been to Europe more times than any other country in Asia or even the new shopping malls in Orchard.
Europeans, at least those that I have met automatically assume you are far more cultured than their brash ways if you are either Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Wealthier, perhaps in time, seeing as how the rise of China is ongoing and inevitable, but everyone knows that the Japanese and Koreans lead a far more affluent lifestyle than they do in general.
Education, german medical students consider the medical faculty in Singapore to be elite. The likes of Heidelberg of which you would know quite a bit more than I would. And if that is the case with such an important faculty, people would naturally draw the conclusion that the other remaining departments must be of equal worth no?
I do agree though that when I told some Poles that I was a native speaker, they immediately thought I was joking.
As for that little point about taking pictures, of course if you're in Asia, people would want to take pictures with the cool looking white guy/girl. Take a trip to eastern Europe, and suddenly everyone wants to take a picture with you, people you don't know want to show you their university campus, It is a matter of perspective I think.
Sorry for having such a long wall of text, but this just piqued my interest. And about the French, I cannot concur but I cannot disagree either, it does have a certain allure to it. But I have certainly had no trouble getting in white people despite the fact that I'm yellow and not French. Just my spare change from my coin purse.
Yours,
Bryan
